Naomi Campbell has been banned from running a charity for five years following a financial investigation

Naomi Campbell is banned from serving as a charity trustee for five years after a British watchdog found evidence of financial abuse at the model’s Fashion for Relief charity.

The UK Charities Commission published a report on Thursday noting that the charity was “poorly run” and “inadequately financially managed.”

The investigation found that the charity spent less than 9% of its earnings on grants and causes, and that some of the charity’s spending was “unjustified”. This included staying at a five-star hotel and providing security for Campbell, 54, at an event at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, as well as “spa treatments, room service and the purchase of cigarettes.”

Two of Campbell’s co-trustees, Bianca Hellmich and Veronica Chou, were also banned from serving as trustees for nine and four years respectively. A Charities Commission investigation found that Hellmich received more than £290,000, or more than $388,000, in consulting fees that were not approved by the Commission.

The committee noted that Fashion for Relief had “failed to manage” its partnerships with two charities: Save the Children Fund and the Mayor’s Fund for London. The commission hired interim managers to make outstanding payments to charities totaling approximately 345,000 pounds, or more than $460,000.

“This investigation, and the work of the interim managers we appointed to run the charity in place of its trustees, resulted in the recovery of £344,000 and the protection of a further £98,000 for the charity,” Tim Hopkins, deputy director of the Charities Commission, said in a statement. “I am pleased that the investigation has taken into account donations to other charities this organization has previously supported.”

Fashion for Relief, which was officially registered in 2015, ten years after its founding, was dissolved and removed from the national register of charities in March.

The legendary British supermodel founded Fashion For Relief in 2005. Her website states that she has “supported many important humanitarian causes,” including the Ebola crisis and Hurricane Katrina, as well as other causes such as Time’s Up.

Naomi Campbell is “very concerned” by the Charities Commission’s findings

In an interview with the Associated Press in Paris on Thursday, Campbell said: “I just learned about the findings today and I am very concerned. We are investigating on our end.”

On Thursday evening, the French Ministry of Culture awarded him the title of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters.

“Since I had no control over my charity, I put it in the hands of a lawyer,” she continued. “That’s why we’re investigating to find out what and how.”

“Because everything I do and every penny I raise goes to charity.”
