Why singer Alka Yagnik has been in a long-distance marriage for over two decades

Alka Yagnik is considered one of the greatest singers in the history of Indian cinema, whose vocals are credited with some of the most iconic Bollywood songs. Her love story is no less than the plot of a movie with a happy ending. Despite being one of the most popular names in the country, Alka Yagnik prefers to keep her personal life private. For the uninitiated, the singer is the wife of businessman Neeraj Kapoor; the couple has a daughter named Syesha Kapoor. The story of how these two came to be is a movie story.

According to reports, Alka Yagnik first met Neeraj Kapoor on a train. They became friends during the trip and decided to stay in touch. Even though they both had completely different professions, they continued to meet and eventually developed feelings for each other over the course of six months of their friendship. In 1989, they married after two years of dating.

The road to marriage was not easy for the couple. So when Alka Yagnik revealed her relationship with Neeraj to her parents, they did not want her to marry him. Since Neeraj Kapoor was a businessman from Shillong, her parents believed that a long-distance relationship could become a major obstacle in their married life. Alka did not lose faith and remained confident as Neeraj decided to shift his base to Mumbai.

When they got married, Neeraj moved to Mumbai and started a business. According to reports, he suffered heavy losses on the spot. In an old interview, Alka revealed that she herself told Neeraj to come back to Shillong and continue his business. Apparently, after four to five years of marriage, they went through a difficult phase in their married life, but both realized that they couldn’t live without each other. For the last 28 years, Neeraj Kapoor and Alka Yagnik have maintained a long-distance marriage.
