Toyota ends its sponsorship with the International Olympic Committee for the “political” games.

Japanese auto giant Toyota is to end its sponsorship of the top-tier Olympic Games, its president announced, citing the sporting showcase’s “increasingly political” influence that is pushing athletes into the background.

In 2015, Toyota signed a 10-year sponsorship agreement with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

But now that the Paris Games are over, the automaker has decided to terminate the contract, CEO Akio Toyoda said during a podcast episode uploaded Thursday on the company’s YouTube channel.

β€œI have been wondering for some time whether this event really puts athletes first,” Toyoda said.

β€œIt’s becoming more and more political.”
