Killer Helene made landfall in Florida as a powerful Category 4 hurricane, and although the storm has weakened, it continues to threaten more northern states in its path.

As of 11:00 a.m. Friday, Helene has broken through the Carolinas and is currently hanging over the southeastern part of the country.

The storm continues to move north and will weaken. On Friday morning, the tropical storm was centered 80 miles east-northeast of Atlanta and was moving north at 30 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph.

Catastrophic floods continue to pose a major threat to the region. Areas from northern Georgia to the southern Appalachians are expected to feel the worst on Friday. Flood warnings have also been issued for parts of Tennessee.

Will its remnants affect New York?

The storm will not affect the New York area as of Friday morning. However, we can expect a rainy weekend.

Helena’s aftermath

Hurricane Helene made landfall at 11:10 PM EST on Thursday evening, approximately 16 miles west-southwest of Perry, Florida. Helene was classified as a Category 4 with sustained winds of 200 km/h.

At least six people died as a storm hit the Southeast:

  • Florida: At least one person died in the Tampa area after a crash on Interstate 4 left a highway sign on the roof of a vehicle.
  • North Carolina: Charlotte firefighters say a tree fell on a house, trapping two people inside. One person was taken to hospital, the other was found dead at home.
  • South Carolina: One storm-related death has been reported so far in the state, after a tree fell on a home in Anderson County.
  • Georgia: Helene caused at least three deaths in Georgia. At least two people died in Wheeler County after a trailer was damaged during a tornado. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, a third fatality in Georgia is also being investigated following reports of a vehicle crashing into a tree in Colquitt County.

As of 9:15 a.m. Friday, about 3.2 million people in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee were without power, according to poweroutage.us.

Other storms to watch

Meanwhile, Hurricane John weakened again into a tropical storm Thursday evening after strengthening again to become a Category 1 hurricane earlier in the day. A so-called “zombie storm,” a storm that weakens and then strengthens again after returning to warm waters, it brought floods and landslides to the southwestern coast of Mexico.

Forecasters say Tropical Storm Isaac strengthened on Friday into a hurricane in the open Atlantic Ocean that could cause dangerous surf in parts of Bermuda.
