Lady Gaga says ‘Joker’ role ‘didn’t leave me creative’

Lady Gaga had plenty of inspiration for her upcoming album Harlequin.

The Oscar winner opened up about the “profound experience” she had while playing Harleen “Lee” Quinzel (aka Harley Quinn) in the film Joker: Folie à Deuxexplaining how her portrayal of the DC Comics character sparked the creation of the companion album.

“The idea of dual identity has always been part of my music-making,” she told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “I have always created characters in my music and when I created Lee Jokershe just had a huge influence on me. There was so much music in the movie, so much music that I love, and I was able to discover this character through the story, the music that we played every day, and the dancing and the costumes and the makeup. So I kind of had a deep experience with this character, and she just wouldn’t leave me creatively, so I decided I wanted to make an entire album inspired by her.

A musical sequel to the 2019 Oscar-winning film directed by Todd Phillips Jokerpremiering in U.S. theaters on October 4, Joaquin Phoenix reprises his role as the titular villain Arthur Fleck, now a patient at Arkham State Hospital, where he falls in love with fellow patient Lee. As the couple’s romance blossoms through internal musical numbers, Fleck’s loyal followers rise up to snatch him away.

Gaga explained the role: “She’s a really complex woman, and I think, especially as a woman in music and a producer, that it was really cool to say, ‘This album will be and will be what I want when I decide.’ whenever I feel like it. If I want it to be blues, it will be blues. If I want it to be funky, it will be funky. If I want it to be soul, it will be soul.”

“Everything was in the image of this character, but also in the depth of her soul, which is actually me,” Gaga said. “Every character I play is a burden to me. On this record I wrestle with a lot of feelings about what I’ve been through as an artist, everything I’ve been through growing up in the public eye, and the industry since I was a teenager.

Gaga recently announced that Harlequin will release on the Friday before Joker: Folie à Deuxpremiere. Meanwhile, fans are patiently waiting for her next album LG7whose first single is expected in October.
