Text messages and the key to the indictment

FORT BEND COUNTY, TexasFort Bend County Judge KP George is facing legal scrutiny following an indictment for his alleged involvement in racist social media posts during his re-election campaign.

Court documents show that George allegedly tried to reset the phone before turning it over to investigators, which raised concerns among legal and political analysts about the potential consequences for his public image.

The indictment involves his former employee and consultant Taral Patel, a candidate for County Commissioner District 3, who is accused of posting racially insensitive comments on a fictitious Facebook account called “Antonio Scalywag.” Patel faces criminal charges for his allegations, which reportedly included a message sent to George asking him to approve a racist post during George’s 2022 campaign.

Investigators noted that the Scalywag account posted on George’s page on September 26, 2022 coincided with his re-election bid. The allegations suggest George replied to Patel’s message, asking him to correct the post.

While the charges against George are misdemeanors that do not disqualify him from office, political analysts say the incident could significantly impact public perception of him in a county known for its diversity and political integrity.

Marc Jones, a political science professor at Rice University, characterized the situation as a serious error in judgment for George, who otherwise has a good track record.

Investigators say they tried to seize George’s cell phone at his home in Richmond on September 17 and observed him “tampering” with the device. Reportedly factory reset after multiple failed password attempts.

Authorities seized two mobile phones and a laptop as part of an investigation into corruption in society.

Due to the nature of the case, although George faces misdemeanor charges, it will be tried by a jury in state district court.
