Katy Perry’s ‘national anthem’ snub has disappointed AFL fans

Katy Perry refuses to sing the national anthem during the Grand Final.

Katy Perry left Australian fans in disbelief after omitting one of her most beloved songs from her AFL grand final appearance on Saturday.

The pop star dazzled the MCG audience by performing eight of her hits, including: Roar, fireworks and California girls along with two new songs from her latest album 143.

However, fans were disappointed that she didn’t perform her 2008 hit Hot and cold, which gained cult status in Australia as the theme song for MasterChef Australia.

Viewers were quick to express their frustration on social media, with one fan writing on Twitter: “As if they didn’t get Katy Perry to play Hot and cold. I guess it’s a joke considering how important this song is.”

Another joked: “Surprised, Katy wasn’t singing Hot and cold. It’s definitely the one song that so many football fans can relate to!”

Though Hot and cold became iconic in Australia as part of the intro to MasterChef, Channel Ten was forced to remove it due to high licensing fees.

There were rumors that performing the hit might show prejudice against the band, and Perry herself admitted that she was warned against singing the hit.

However, the pop icon threw caution to the wind by opening the set with an empowering anthem that many fans considered the unofficial theme of the underdog.

Despite some initial controversy, Perry delivered an energetic performance, captivating the audience with his hits.

She even treated the audience to a duet I kissed a girl with Australian singer Tina Arena.
