The Clive Greenbelt Trail will soon be detoured due to road construction on Interstate 80/35.

The town of Clive announced in a news release Thursday that detour signs have been placed on the trail ahead of the closure of a section of the trail that intersects with the Interstate 80/35 bridge over Walnut Creek. The closure begins on Tuesday.

The Iowa Department of Transportation will add lanes to the interstate bridge as part of a larger project to replace the Hickman Road interchange with a diverging diamond configuration. It is a $94 million project scheduled for completion in 2028, according to the Iowa DOT website.

As part of the construction of the bridge over Walnut Creek, barriers will be placed on the Clive Greenbelt Trail at the Campbell Recreation Area bridge and at the trail intersection at Northwest 114th Street.

Trail detours begin at Campbell Recreation Area, 12853 Woodlands Parkway in Clive, west of the Interstate Bridge and east of the Northwest 100th Street Bridge in Clive. While construction is underway, the trail from the east will allow pedestrians and cyclists access to Clive Town Hall, the library and the aquatic center.

The map shows diversions to the Clive Greenbelt Trail starting October 1 and expected to last until 2025.

“We understand this is an inconvenience to one of Clive’s best-loved facilities, but once construction is complete we will have a better route with new connections to businesses and amenities in the area,” Clive Mayor John Edwards told the city’s news release.

“There will be heavy equipment and materials in the area during construction. We must prioritize the safety of workers and trail users, so please leave construction areas and use alternative routes,” Edwards added.

The city encouraged pedestrians, cyclists and drivers near the detours to take care of themselves, especially at busy intersections.
