NYT columnist Michelle Goldberg hopes Tim Walz ‘remotely’ baits Trump during vice presidential debate

Appearing Friday on MSNBC’s “All In With Chris Hayes,” New York Times columnist Michelle Goldberg offered some advice to Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz ahead of his upcoming debate against J.D. Vance.

Walz, in her opinion, should try to “remotely” tease Donald Trump, reminding viewers that Vance often spoke negatively about him.

The comment came during a discussion with the show’s host, Chris Hayes, about the extremist right wing that Vance has espoused since becoming Trump’s running mate. It is worth noting that an important article published by the Washington Post on Friday revealed that JD Vance continued to criticize Trump in extremely harsh words well into 2020.

“I think what J.D. Vance does, some of what J.D. Vance does, it’s not intentional, right? For example, a lot of the things people don’t like about him are things he said in right-wing media when he was trying to win the very right-wing Ohio Senate primary. But since he was nominated, he hasn’t changed,” Hayes said. “And I think of it as basically a kamikaze mission, which means people won’t like me and I don’t care, I’ll get little favor, but I’m going to deliver this kind of poison discourse every day.”

“I don’t know if it’s effective or not, but how do you read it?” Hayes asked Goldberg.

“I think that’s certainly going to be his approach in the debate, right? Because people don’t like him, so he can be mean, he can be mean, and… right now, Tim Walz is one of the most popular politicians in the country, right? Even after all kinds of slander about his military service, attacks on his family and the like. So J.D. Vance just needs to drag Tim Waltz down the drain with him, and I think he’s probably going to be quite mischievous and skillful in trying to do that,” Golberg said.

“I hope Tim Walz does it,” she continued, “I mean, you mentioned that article in the Washington Post. I think it’s such a bomb. And I really think that the political media and the political world are not reacting to this because we all knew about it. As you know, JD Vance was saying all this about Donald Trump, comparing him to Hitler, comparing him to heroin, and his story as to why he’s on the list now is that Donald Trump’s presidency changed his mind. Donald Trump’s presidency proved him wrong.”

“So here he is saying that Donald Trump has failed on the issue that Donald Trump supporters point to as the main reason he should be returned to office. “I mean, I think it undoes the whole conversion narrative that JD Vance was trying to spin,” Goldberg added.

“And Tim Walsh has this responsibility… not only to explain it to people, but just like Kamala Harris pissed off Donald Trump when she was on stage with him, I think Tim Walz can do it remotely. Because I don’t think Donald Trump knows about these quotes and he won’t be happy to learn JD Vance’s verdict on him,” she said.
