TOKYO (Kyodo) – The Tokyo government has launched a new smartphone dating app that uses artificial intelligence to match people who are serious about marriage based on their values.

Tokyo Enmusubi, or dating in Tokyo, is available to people over 18 years of age who live or commute to the Japanese capital. When registering, users undergo an online interview and must provide photo ID and documents proving their income and that they are legally single to ensure their safety on the platform.

The move is part of a broader effort to boost Japan’s falling birth rate, with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government aiming to provide support to single people and families at various stages of life – from first meeting to marriage, childbirth and raising children.

Users can download the app on their smartphone or access the platform’s website via their computer. Registration costs 11,000 yen ($77) and membership is valid for two years.

The website’s AI technology will suggest potential love interests to each other based on a 110-question assessment.

Users can also search for partners based on their desired characteristics.

“Many people want to get married but have not entered into an active relationship,” said a metropolitan government official. “We want to help encourage them to take the first step.”
