A footballer makes a miraculous comeback as the star announces his comeback a year after escaping death in a horrific car crash

  • Bachar Houli will return to the pitch
  • A Richmond hero almost lost his life in a car accident
  • He will represent the local football club

Bachar Houli will return to football just over a year after he narrowly escaped death in a horrific car crash.

The three-time Premier League player was airlifted to hospital and spent weeks in care with serious injuries when the car he was traveling in overturned during a camping trip to Canberra.

Houli underwent surgery in a Melbourne hospital after breaking his pelvis and stayed out of the spotlight for much of his recovery.

But now the 232-game champion will return to the field for Victorian local club Newport in the Western Football Netball League.

“We are very excited to announce that Bachar Houli will be playing with Newport in 2025,” the club announced in an Instagram post.

“Local man, great man, icon of the game. We can’t wait to see it in burgundy, black and gold in 2025.”

When the accident occurred, Tigers chief executive Brendon Gale said the star was in “pretty bad shape” and was at the beginning of a long road to recovery.

Houli’s brother-in-law Khaled was also injured in the accident.

Two weeks after the accident, Houli shared a video message expressing relief that his injuries were not fatal.

I hope everyone has a fantastic day. I just wanted to share this short message as a thank you,” said Houli, a father of three.

“I just wanted to show my gratitude to all the caring people who asked about my progress. I had successful surgery on my pelvis which was quite damaged. Apparently this was taken care of.

Houli, a devout Muslim, took a glass-half-full approach to his serious accident.

“The fact that I can breathe again, that I have another chance in life that the Almighty gave me,” he said.

– Because it could have been much worse.

“He really tests those he loves. I take it to mean that the Almighty loves me and has put me through this test. And there is wisdom behind it.

“Someone who truly loves Allah, the only and faithful one, and Allah puts him to this test, wants to see how he will react.

Allah wants them to continue to be grateful even in difficult times? By Allah, I am very grateful. By Allah, I am very, very grateful.
