Vincent Iorio, Ilya Protas among other players excluded from Washington Capitals training camp

The Washington Capitals cut 20 additional players, including the five players reported Saturday who were placed on waivers, on Sunday after taking Saturday off.

In addition to the players placed on waivers, left winger Ilya Protas, 78th overall pick in June by Washington, reassigned to the OHL’s Windsor Spitfires and defenseman Vincent Iorio, 55th overall pick (and first by the Capitals) in of the 2021 season. The NHL draft pick, on loan to the AHL’s Hershey Bears, was among the most notable names to be cut on Sunday.

The updated training camp roster, which is reduced to 29 without accounting for center Nicklas Backstrom and right wing TJ Oshie (both of whom will be placed on long-term injured reserve at the start of the season ), can be viewed here.

The Capitals have two exhibition games remaining (against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday, against the Boston Bruins on Saturday, October 5).

Their final 23-man roster is expected at 5 p.m. ET on Monday, October 7. Washington will open the regular season on Saturday, October 12 against the New Jersey Devils.
