Bangladeshi film ‘Boli’ officially premiered in Canada after winning commendable accolades at many prestigious international film festivals over the year, including the Busan International Film Festival and the Shanghai Film Festival.

The film can be seen at the Central Parkway Cinema in Mississauga, and its international premiere will take place on Saturday (September 27). Confirming the news, director Iqbal Hossain Chowdhury said, “We have released the film on a limited scale in Canada. The first show premiered yesterday, and viewers will be able to watch it throughout the week.”

Set against the backdrop of the traditional Jabbar er Boli Khela (Jabbar Wrestling Competition) in Chattogram, ‘Boli’ (‘The Wrestler’) showcases a unique cultural heritage.

The film received government funding for the 2020–21 fiscal year. The film is produced by Piplu R Khan and co-produced by Saiful Azim and Gousul Alam Shaon. Nasir Uddin Khan plays the lead role, playing a quirky coastal fisherman. The cast also includes Priyam Archie, Angel Noor and AKM Itmam, among others.

Last year, “Boli” gained international recognition, winning an award at the 28th Busan International Film Festival. The film won the main prize in the prestigious New Currents section. Even though the album gained popularity at various international festivals, it is yet to be released in Bangladesh.

Director Iqbal Hossain Chowdhury, however, assured fans that the film will release in local theaters soon. “We are actively working on its national premiere. The film has already been submitted to the Film Certification Commission and once we receive approval, we will set a release date. Our target is to release Bola in Bangladeshi cinemas by the end of this year,” he said.
