If you’re single, you may have heard some of the standard bla, bla, bla suggestions on how to meet that special someone – dating apps and sites to use, singles meetups like speed dating you can attend, matchmakers you can go to you should call. It’s okay if you really like doing this kind of thing. However, if such suggestions make you sigh, groan, feel nauseous, or even excessively itch, they may simply not be right for you.

After all, there is no one method that works for all singles, especially when it seems like a lot of work. And the last thing you want is to waste a lot of money, effort and, most importantly, time doing something painful but unproductive.

Instead, things tend to work better when you actually enjoy the process and have fun with it. It has to be real fun, not forced, fake fun. When you really have fun doing something, magical things can happen, such as:

  • You tend to do this all the time: Yeah, you probably won’t say, “Oh my gosh, do I have to do something funny again?” You know the saying that showing up is half the battle.
  • You’ll be better at it: People don’t say things like, “I hate twerking, but I’m so good at it.” No, you’re usually better at what you like.
  • You will see more perspectives and possibilities: When you’re having fun, it’s easier to relax. And when you relax, all parts of your body open up, which in this case means your eyes and mind.
  • You can become more attractive: When you’re having fun, you’re also more likely to show up and be more fun.
  • At least you’ll have fun: Why watch reality TV for entertainment when reality itself can entertain?

Perhaps the best way to meet someone special is to follow these four steps:

  1. Think about what you really like to do
  2. Determine how you can do this in a way that allows you to meet more people
  3. Do it more.
  4. Keep doing it.

This may involve choosing which standard activities and dating opportunities are right for you. For example, if you enjoy maneuvering through crowds and sipping drinks, perhaps Singles Happy Hours will be better for you than more distant things like dating apps. It may also mean finding ways to make the various standard dating routes blah blah blah blah blah blah blah more fun. For example, what about going to singles meetups in places you would want to go anyway? If the meeting is at a cool museum and the art of small talk isn’t your thing, you can just look at the art on the walls.

Alternatively, the above four steps may tell you that none of the standard bla bla bla dating routes are right for you. Ultimately, anything that can put you in contact with more people can help increase your dating opportunities. This can be achieved with many activities performed on a regular basis, with the possible exception of solo ice fishing.

Here’s another bonus of doing something you enjoy. You’re more likely to meet people who like the same things. For example, chances are that your dance class won’t be filled with people who despise dancing.

Ultimately, the best thing you can do in terms of dating is to do what works best for your life. Don’t view dating as something that should force you to derail or put other aspects of your life on hold.

Instead, remember that the right lifestyle, attitude and outlook can help you attract the right person. So do things that make you feel happy and fulfilled. If you don’t know what makes you happy, figuring it out should be a priority for many different reasons. After all, if you can’t be happy yourself, how can you expect others to be happy around you?
