But then tragedy strikes when a body is discovered in Nantucket Harbor just hours before the ceremony. Suddenly, everyone at the wedding becomes a suspect – including the groom’s famous mother, a crime writer. It’s exciting, twisty and keeps you guessing until the last page. If you’ve already skimmed through the novel and are looking for books with similar themes – failed weddings, secrets and, surprisingly, murder, I’ve put together a list of five books like The perfect couple to add to the pile on your nightstand.

Billed as White Lotus meets Agatha Christie, Illegitimacy— Reese’s Book Club’s August 2024 selection — begins with woman Ellery heading to a luxury resort in Big Sur, California to celebrate her 20th wedding anniversary. First catch? She is there alone after her recent divorce. Not only is loneliness on her mind, but during her trip, a wedding is scheduled to take place at the resort. I say it will happen because it never does; Ellery finds the groom’s body floating in the pool. Soon, another mysterious death occurs, and to make matters worse, the investigation is foiled by a violent storm that leaves the guests stranded in the resort. Like any good thriller, there are plot twists, seemingly promising leads that lead nowhere, and many secrets threatening to be uncovered.

Robin is a queer woman in her 30s living in Brooklyn and working on her Ph.D. dissertation on society’s obsession with marriage. So she’s surprised when Ellie, her estranged childhood best friend, asks her to be a bridesmaid at her wedding. And this isn’t your average wedding, just like it’s not your average society. Laskey’s novel is set in a modern, slightly dystopian version of America, a world where the government encourages marriage and where social media has decided that single women at age 27 are “leftovers” and at age 35 “rotten.” As Robin and Ellie fall deeper down the rabbit hole of planning and making sure the wedding goes off without a hitch, things get darker, as the book’s opening lines foreshadow: “If you want to know the story of how me and my best friend tried to kill each other , I should probably start with the night she asked me to be her maid of honor.
