Searching for traces of discrepancies

Gaining knowledge that a series of ancient weapons – created during the Calamity to strike down the gods – could significantly aid them in their fight against the Chroma Conclave, a group of adventurers began a quest to track them down.

Vax’ildan (voiced by Liam O’Brien) obtained his first clue – the Deathwalker Totem armor – after making a deal with the Matron of Ravens in her master’s tomb in the sunken temple of Vasselheim. The armor greatly increases his speed, ability to evade enemies, and even gives him the power of flight with a set of dark, feathery wings.

Scanlan received the mythical longsword Mythcarver from a sphinx named Kamaljiori. This silver blade resonates with nearby musical tones, enhancing his bardic powers. However, this was quickly stolen by Umbrasyl.

The party then traveled to the kingdom of Fey to find the Bow of Fentrhas, fighting Saundor – a corrupt arch-fairy – who happens to possess it. Vex’ahlia eventually acquires a bow that wields the power of the oracle and the Bramble Shot.

Finally, Grog confronts his past and battles his cruel uncle Kevdak (voiced by Ralph Ineson), who is now the leader of the Storm Pack and wielder of the Titan Stone Cubes. After winning the battle, Grog gains impressive gauntlet strength and the ability to increase or decrease in size.

In Season 3, the party will undoubtedly track down the four remaining Clues of Divergence from the original Critical Role campaign – The Whisper, Ruin of the Cabal, Plate of the Dawn Martyr, and Spire of Conflux.

Vax makes a pact with death (sort of)

While searching for the Deathwalker Totem armor in the ancient city of Vasselheim, the Vox Machina gang travels to a hidden tomb that was built for the Matron of Ravens – AKA, the goddess of death. The tomb is believed to contain the body (and armor) of her master, Purvan Suul.

However, once inside, the gang quickly discovers that the tomb is full of booby traps. After pressing a hidden switch, Percy and Vex discover a giant sarcophagus rising from the ground, holding Suul’s body in the Death Ward.

But when Percy reaches for the Trace, he accidentally triggers a trap that instantly kills Vex. As a result, Vax makes a deal with the Raven Keeper to take him instead of his twin, offering his life in exchange for hers.

The deity agrees to this, taking Vax as the Raven Queen’s new champion – but this deal certainly comes with some conditions. The million dollar question is: when will he pay off his debt and take Vax’s life?

Keyleth undergoes a trial by fire

The lovably clumsy half-elf druid has long been on her Aramenté, a noble quest in which she travels to the remaining three Ashari tribes to complete their trials. Once she successfully completes it, she will become the leader of the Air Ashari tribe and inherit the title of Voice of the Storm.

However, Kiki has not yet taken any test due to crippling self-doubt and fear that her powerful mother Vilya (voiced by Janet Varney) failed the test and has since gone missing.

However, when the Fire Ashari tribe – along with her father and friends – are attacked by deadly fire creatures, Keyleth overcomes her fears and travels to the Plane of Fire, transforming into an elemental to heroically close the rift.

After completing the first of Keyleth’s three trials, there are still two remaining – the Earth and Water trials. While it’s doubtful she’ll finally complete Aramenté in Season 3, her new elemental powers will certainly come in handy against the Chroma Conclave.

The party defeated Umbrasyl (simply!)

Armed with the new Divergence Clues and with the help of the remaining members of the Storm Pack, the gang travels to Westruun and Percy sets a trap for Umbrasyl.

When the dragon arrives to claim his treasure, Vex fires an arrow to activate the trap and ensnare him. However, the dragon soon breaks free after the gang attack, quickly turning invisible. After another dragon attack, Scanlan proposes a new plan to Vax – to make an impact, they must enter the dragon from the inside.

The pair successfully enter the dragon’s back and head towards its belly, and Scanlan uses Kaylie’s stationary sword to deal damage to the dragon every time it moves. Meanwhile, Umbrasyl flies off to his lair in Mount Gatshadow with Grog in tow, tied to the beast with a bloody ax and rope.

Vax takes up his mantle of Champion of Death and gains wings to save him and Scanlan as they escape from Umbrasyl. The gang then regroups and enters Umbrasyl’s lair to attack, but Scanlan hesitates and hangs back. However, with the invisibility of the dragons and the use of the Mythical Sculptor, Vox Machina’s situation looks dire. This is until Scanlan sneakily steals the Mythical Sculptor and stabs the dragon in the eye to kill it.

An unexpected ally is revealed

After killing Umbrasyl, the gang returns to Whitestone to regroup. During a ceremonial meeting with allies, all participants except Vox Machina and Yennen (voiced by Gina Torres) are knocked unconscious.

Yennen then slowly changes his form, becoming the green dragon Raishan (voiced by Cree Summer), a member of the Chroma Conclave.

The dragon assures the gang that he is their ally as they share a common goal of defeating Thordak. She explains that Cinder King has gone mad and to defeat him, they will need her help.

It looks like Vox Machina will somehow have to put aside its complicated relationship and partnership with the green dragon – for now.

Dragon eggs, lots of dragon eggs

Season 2 of Legend of Vox Machina ends on a rather bad note – revealing a mountain of dragon eggs waiting in the wings.

As revealed by Raishan’s newfound ally, Throdak has a horde of eggs that will soon hatch into a mighty army of dragons.

So next season, our adorable band of misfits will have to face not only the mightiest dragons, but also a potential army of baby dragons. Yes!

Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 will be released on October 3, 2024.
