One dead, two injured, in I-94 crash at Moorland Road

(This story was updated to add new information.)

A 93-year-old woman from Colgate died and two Colgate women were injured when their vehicle struck the median wall and lost control before crashing on Interstate 94 westbound in Waukesha County Monday.

The Wisconsin State Patrol identified Mary Phillips, 93, as the passenger who died in the incident, which took place at Moorland Road near Brookfield at about 4:10 pm, according to a news release from the Wisconsin State Patrol.

The driver, Elizabeth Phillips, 57, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. A second passenger, Deborah Goutis, 70, was also injured.

The State Patrol originally said that a Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling westbound on I-94 when another vehicle struck it, causing the Jeep to strike the median wall before losing control. In an updated release, the agency didn’t say another vehicle prompted the crash, but said the Jeep struck the median wall and lost control.

That caused the Jeep to cross all lanes of traffic and strike the concrete barrier on the right shoulder, according to the agency.

The three Colgate women inside the Jeep were all taken to a hospital. The agency said Monday evening that one person died due to injuries suffered in the crash.

The State Patrol did not immediately respond to a reporter’s inquiry on the potential involvement of another vehicle in the crash.

The Wisconsin State Patrol Southeast Region is investigating the details of the crash. There was no alcohol use in the car and enforcement action against the driver is pending investigation, according to the agency.

The incident closed I-94 westbound, as far east as the Zoo Interchange, as authorities investigated the crash. The Interstate 41 southbound to I-94 westbound ramp and the I-41 northbound to I-94 westbound ramp was closed.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation said the incident was cleared at 7:39 pm Monday.
