Dr. Art Laffer on “Taxes Have Consequences”

Dr. Art Laffer on “Taxes Have Consequences”

Once upon a time – we’re talking about the 1980s – there was a Hollywood movie about a teenager who took a day off from school.

While Ferris Bueller, his girlfriend and best friend jumped from one adventure to the next, his economics teacher – played by Ben Stein – tried to explain a modern concept to his classmates: the Laffer curve.

The board may be a throwback to the classrooms of the last century, but Dr. Art Laffer’s tax theory continues to influence economics and politics to this day.

On Thursday, Dr. Laffer visits our campus – the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

His lecture, titled “Taxes Have Consequences: The History of the U.S. Income Tax,” begins at 4:30 p.m. in the Tennessee Room at the University Center.

Dr. Claudia Kramer is the director of Free Enterprise. Scott L. Probasco and Professor of Economics at UTC’s Gary W. Rollins College of Business.
