The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power for Prime Video had a shaky start, but over time, viewers warmed to the fantasy drama. Now that the show’s second season is coming to an end, fans are wondering whether the show will continue with a third installment.

Although the series is currently one of the most talked about series, its huge budget and high production value may prove to be an obstacle to its continuation. So has “Rings of Power” been renewed for season 3? Let’s find out.

Will Rings of Power return with season 3 on Prime Video?

As of now, Prime Video has not renewed Rings of Power for a third season. However, the project’s executive producer, Charlotte Brändström, recently suggested that the creators may announce a renewal of the series soon. “I can’t say much about season three, but I think there will be good news soon,” he told RadioTimes.

When the series premiered in 2022, co-showrunner J.D. Payne revealed that they planned to make at least five seasons. “The rights that Amazon bought were for a 50-hour show. They knew from the beginning that this was the size of the canvas – it was a big story with a clear beginning, middle and end.”

“There are things in the first season that don’t come to fruition until the fifth season,” Payne said at the time. So in the coming days we can expect an announcement about the renewal of Rings of Power for season 3. However, the final decision rests with Prime Video.

When will the third season of Rings of Power premiere on Prime Video?

Two years passed between the premiere of the first two seasons of the series. The debut season premiered in September 2022, and the second season premiered in August 2024. Given the visual effects, production work and scale necessary to make the series, it is likely that the next season will take another two years to produce. So, the third season of Rings of Power could premiere on Prime Video in August or September 2026.

What can you expect from the third season of Rings of Power?

If the series is greenlit for a third season, it will continue to further explore JRR Tolkien’s Middle-earth universe. Co-showrunner Patrick McKay has decided to keep plot details for the upcoming season a secret for now. He told RadioTimes: “This season (Season 2) we’re forging the Rings, Sauron and Celebrimbor, tricking the Elven smiths and the battle for Eregion – and we’ll have to stay tuned to see what we do next.”
