World War II film ‘The White Bird’ starring Helen Mirren is scheduled for release in North America

After years of delays White Bird will finally debut in North American theaters. The World War II film starring Helen Mirren and Gillian Anderson explores the dangers of being Jewish in German-occupied France and the lengths people go to keep their friends and family safe.

It serves as a sequel to the 2017 game Wonderstarring Bryce Gheisar, White Bird tells the story of Sara Blum, a Jewish girl growing up in German-occupied France during World War II. Blum was hidden by her friend Julien, who teaches her his school curriculum in the evenings, when it is safer. They later become each other’s first loves.

After the Allies liberated Monte Cassino, Julien was arrested by the Germans and placed on a transport to a camp in the mountains. Unfortunately, he dies while trying to escape with other prisoners.

Liongate acquired the rights to RJ Palacio’s book, on which the film is based, in 2019, when it was announced that Marc Forster would direct. The screenplay was written by Mark Bomback, and the film was produced by Palacio, David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman.

The casting of Mirren, Anderson, Orlando Schwerdt and Ariella Glaser was announced in early 2021, along with confirmation that Gheisar would reprise his role as Jacob. Mirren plays the elderly Sarah Blum, and Anderson plays Julien’s mother, Vivienne Beaumier.

White Bird it was initially scheduled for release in September 2022, but was delayed several times. The trailer was screened at the 43rd San Francisco Jewish Film Festival in July 2023, and finally hit theaters in parts of Europe in January 2024.
