The Lake Superior Zoo announces the birth of cotton tamarin twins

The Lake Superior Zoo has announced the arrival of new members of the tamarin family after twin cotton tops were born in September.

Twins Mira and Deno were born on September 15, and their parents Echo and Tango were born. According to the zoo, the parents are still learning parenting skills, which they believe will be necessary to continue breeding the cottontail tamarin species.

Cottontop tamarins are critically endangered, with only about 2,000 mature tamarins of this species remaining in the wild. Their habitat is limited to northern Columbia, and the Lake Superior Zoo says cottontops face many threats in the wild, including habitat destruction from deforestation and the illegal pet trade.

The zoo says conservation efforts have played a key role in increasing the cotton-top population and encourages conservation measures to ensure the species’ survival.

While visitors may hope to catch a glimpse of Mira and Deno, the zoo says they are giving the new family time to rest and be quiet.

This means that their habitat will be open to visitors every day from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.
