Melania Trump reveals strong stance on abortion rights

Former first lady Melania Trump emphasized her strong support for abortion access in her upcoming memoir.

A copy of the book, obtained by Guardianreportedly revealed that the former first lady strongly supports abortion access, something that has not been previously reported. In her book, she devoted a lot of space to expressing seemingly unconditional support for access to abortion, claiming that there is “no room for negotiation” on this issue.

“It is imperative that women are guaranteed the autonomy to decide their preferences regarding having children, based on their own beliefs, free from any government intervention or pressure,” the former first lady wrote.

“Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to decide what she does with her body? A woman’s fundamental right to personal freedom and to her own life gives her the right to terminate her pregnancy if she so desires,” she added, which is the opposite position to her husband.

“Limiting a woman’s right to decide to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is tantamount to taking away her control over her own body. I have carried this belief with me throughout my adult life,” she continued.

The former first lady wrote that supporting access to abortion is a “very simple concept” and inextricably linked to human rights. She went a step further and stated that any cultural stigma around abortion should be removed.

“When faced with an unexpected pregnancy, young women often experience feelings of isolation and significant stress. Like most Americans, I support requiring minors to obtain parental consent before undergoing an abortion,” she wrote. “I realize that this is not always possible. Our next generation must be provided with knowledge, safety and comfort, and the cultural stigma associated with abortion must be eradicated.”

Trump then expressed support for abortion access activists and protesters.

“The slogan ‘My body, my choice’ is usually associated with activists and those who are pro-choice in the debate,” the newspaper quoted her as saying. “But if you really think about it, ‘My body, my choice’ applies to both sides – a woman’s right to make an independent decision about her own body, including the right to choose her life. Personal freedom.”

The former first lady’s comments are certain to anger many in the Republican Party, which has largely maintained its opposition to abortion even though it has sidelined the issue in most elections. Some anti-abortion groups have expressed anger at former President Donald Trump for not taking a tougher stance on abortion.
