The order dated September 30, which was supposed to be in force till October 6, expired on the night of October 2-3, the Delhi Police said.

Welcome withdrawal by Delhi Police prohibition order for the capital, the city’s ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday called it a “victory for Hindus.”

According to Delhi Chief Minister and AAP member Saurabh Bharadwaj, the September 30 order, which was to be in force till October 6, has led to “outrage” among Hindus ahead of the nine-day Navratri festival.

“This is a moment of triumph for the people of Delhi, especially Hindus who were worried about how they would celebrate the festival,” Bharadwaj said at a news conference.

Navratri celebrations began on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Bharadwaj also mocked Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, the constitutional head of the Union Territory and representative of the Union government.

The Delhi Police comes under the Union Home Minister.

“This is an embarrassing failure for the lieutenant governor. The central government and its lawyers knew that such ‘absurd’ orders could not be enforced in a sovereign, free country,” Bharadwaj noted, adding that the order was challenged in the Supreme Court by a priest of the Kalkaji temple.

The minister also slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ideological mentor, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The BJP heads the government at the Center and is the main opposition in Delhi.

“The BJP and RSS did not speak out against the order even though they claimed to be ‘defenders of Hinduism’,” the AAP leader said.

A police official told PTI that the order ended on the night of October 2-3. It was released as the overall atmosphere in Delhi was “sensitive” due to issues such as the Waqf Amendment Bill, MCD standing committee elections and pending the DUSU poll results.
