Whenever Andrew Garfield and Stephen Colbert talk, it is usually an emotionally enriching experience. The two have previously talked about spirituality, grief and other deeper parts of the human condition.

Something about the two men’s shared familial loss brings them together in a way that doesn’t often happen between a talk show host and a guest, and that’s a beautiful thing.

Andrew Garfield appears Late show

Well, Garfield showed up at Colbert’s last night Late show once again to discuss another of life’s most pressing matters: a recent meme in which he appeared.

You may remember that about six weeks ago, a promotional photo for the upcoming Garfield and Florence Pugh movie appeared on the Internet, We live in time. You may remember that the photo was completely photobombed by a very specific carousel horse.

This carousel horse:

Last night, Colbert asked Garfield about the situation, and the actor addressed the horse in the room for the first time (seemingly).

“Can you explain what’s going on with the demon horse on the carousel?” Colbert asks, projecting an image. Amid laughter, Garfield explains that the image disappeared just before he was about to begin a six-day phone-free retreat in Northern California. “I was just doom scrolling, like you… and I see this image and I think, ‘Maybe I’m the only one who will notice this crazy horse,'” Garfield says. “In a way, we feel like we’re on his poster.”

The Social network Star then describes opening his phone again after six days and the first thing he sees is Stephen Colbert himself talking about a horse poster, which of course is followed by endless memes.

Garfield also gave Colbert an incredibly thoughtful gift: a T-shirt with a horse that says, “Why the rush?” quote apparently related to the movie. The two then discuss Garfield’s first encounter with love, which is a typically sweet story.
