The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is advising Northern Kentucky drivers of an upcoming traffic diversion on Donaldson Highway (KY 236) in Boone County on Saturday, October 5.

Traffic will be diverted to the newly paved northbound portion of the road between Mineola Pike (KY 3076) (1.64 miles) and Turfway Road (KY 717) (0.81 miles), a distance of 0.83 miles. Information boards have been placed throughout the project area to warn drivers of the upcoming traffic change.

Crews will begin diverting traffic Saturday morning and traffic is expected to be restored in its new configuration from Mineola Pike to Turfway Road by 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 5. These works are being carried out on Saturday morning to ease traffic disruption as this area sees the least traffic volumes during this period.

This traffic change will involve flaggers on both sides of the work zone. Crews will be installing sidewalks on Donaldson Highway and its intersections with Mineola Pike and South Airfield Road.

Once the diversion is complete, drivers should expect to see two 10-foot-long lanes (one in each direction) with a two-foot shoulder on each side.

KYTC District 6 will be releasing further information regarding additional traffic impacts associated with this project in the coming weeks.

Project background: The Donaldson Highway widening and safety improvement project between Houston Road (KY 842) and Mineola Pike began in March 2023. The project involves widening a two-mile section of road to five curbed and guttered lanes, including two through lanes in each direction with the center turn lane. There will also be a sidewalk and a shared road.

“The Donaldson Freeway is currently experiencing bouts of congestion from several businesses, schools, housing developments and commercial properties in the area.” said Bob Yeager, chief district engineer for KYTC’s 6th District office. “This project will help reduce congestion, provide better pedestrian access and overall improve safety,” he said.

The $33.2 million project was awarded to Florence-based Riegler Blacktop. The investment completion date is September 2025.
