“Princess Diaries 3” Gets Exciting Update as Sequel Finds Director 20 Years After Last Installment

‘Joy Ride’ director Adele Lim is making the third film that will celebrate the “core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship”

Shut. Up. The Princess Diaries 3 is officially happening!

Disney has hired Adele Lim to direct the third film, according to multiple reports. Lim directed last year’s raunchy comedy Joy Rideand she previously wrote the screenplays for Crazy Rich Asians and Raya and the Last Dragon.

“As a die-hard fan of the original Princess DiariesI’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide,” Lim said in a statement shared by Variety.

Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews starred in 2001’s The Princess Diaries plus its 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Both were directed by the late Garry Marshall, who died in 2016.

In April, Hathaway, 41, told V Magazine that “we’re in a good place,” in terms of development on the third installment. “That’s all I can say. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place,” added the Oscar winner, who plays Mia Thermopolis in the films.

Andrews, aka Queen Clarisse Renaldi, previously told TODAY.com about potentially reprising her role, “It’s quite a long time now since the two Diaries were done, and I’m not sure, but sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone. “I don’t like it when people milk and milk and milk the subject, you know, till it’s dead.”

Still, the Mary Poppins Oscar winner, 89, added, “I’d be very happy if we did do another one.”

Hathaway told PEOPLE in 2023 it was “thrilling” to “see the level of excitement” fans had for a potential third flick. “It’s a process that requires patience, and so everyone should consider themselves a part of the movie business now, because this is how long it actually takes to make things.”

Another of Hathaway’s hits, 2006’s The Devil Wears Pradaalso has a long-awaited sequel in the works.
