IOWA CITY — Iowa City High School has decided to skip Friday.

The Little Hawks (4-2), powered by three touchdowns from sophomores Dawson Kahl and Bobby Bacon, won their fourth straight game 49-7 over Davenport Central (2-4) in a Class 5A prep football game on Homecoming Night at Bates Field.

After late two-point conversions that had given City High the win the previous two weeks, Bacon and Co. she cooled down the atmosphere and controlled Friday’s match from the beginning.

“It’s definitely nice to come home for Homecoming and just give the people who came to support us a nice, comfortable win,” Bacon said. “It was great to get a big lead and take advantage of it. This is what we want to continue in the future.”

Kahl capped off the first five carries of 80 yards with an impressive 41-yard touchdown run.

Kahl crossed the 100-yard rushing mark on his seventh pass just five minutes into the game. Five rushes later he found dirt in the yard.

“We knew in fall camp that he (Kahl) was going to be a great player,” City High head coach Mitchell Moore said. “He’s going to be a superstar. It is only now learning how to escape in our system, how holes open up and it requires patience.

The next goal was scored by Gabe Egeland on a 6-yard jumper at 2:20 of the first quarter.

Early in the second, Kahl took a shoulder hit and passed a Blue Devil defender for a 37-yard TD.

“Dawson’s physical and mental toughness, which I’ve never seen before in a sophomore, is truly impressive,” Bacon said. “His ability to accelerate quickly and then mentally hang on when things aren’t going well… he has that same attitude for literally 48 minutes.”

Kahl ran 13 times for 156 yards, all in the first half.

With 7:21 left in the second, Bacon got in on the play and found Parker Sutherland for a 4-yard touchdown. The score gave City High a 35-0 lead as the continuous clock rule went into effect.

Late in the second half, Bacon connected with Iyon Harris for a 31-yard TD, giving City High a 42-0 lead at halftime.

“My job today was just to get the ball to our quarterbacks and let them play,” Bacon said. “Davenport Central is a great program and we just wanted to go out and give it our all.”

City’s defense was dominant, allowing the Blue Devils just two first downs and 89 yards of offense.

“Defensively, I like the way we played and we came off the field on third down today,” Moore said.

On the final play of the third, Bacon found Jack Lampe for a 5-yard TD.

Bacon completed 13 of 19 passes for 175 yards.

Carson Williams scored the only score of the game for Davenport Central with a 79-yard rushing touchdown early in the fourth period.

The Little Hawks will look to pick up their fifth straight home game next Friday against Davenport North, while Davenport Central hosts Bettendorf.

“I think it definitely gave us confidence for next week, and then the next two weeks (Linn-Mar and Bettendorf) will be really big,” Kahl said. We need to play at our best level to give ourselves a chance before entering the play-offs.
