Captain Cleveland announces the start of Game 2 of the Guardians’ ALDS

The Cleveland Guardians were completing final preparations for Game 1 of the ALDS against the Detroit Tigers when Stephen Vogt revealed big news about Game 2 on Monday.

The Guardians captain said veteran pitcher Matthew Boyd will start for Cleveland in the second game of the home series.

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone considering Cleveland’s second-half turnover and Boyd’s performance since early August. In eight starts, Boyd had an ERA of 2.72 and a WHIP of 1.13, with five starts striking out at least six batters.

Although Boyd is 33 years old and considered a veteran of the game, he has yet to appear in the postseason, meaning he made his playoff debut on Monday. Still, his experience from playing in the majors for nine years will come to fruition against a young Detroit team.

Chris Atonetti said when signing Boyd in late June that the organization had hoped Boyd would be able to impact the rotation in some way in August. No one could have imagined he would be the second starter in the playoffs.

The other storyline from Game 2 will be who will take the mound for the Tigers. Boyd has spent most of his career on the field in Detroit and has become close to starter Tarik Skubal, who will make the nod for the Tigers. Skubal said before Monday’s series that while the two remain friends, he will definitely be rooting for him on the show.

While we’re still waiting for the results of Game 1, Game 2 promises to be an interesting contest on the field given the plot and story.
