FMB residents are filling sandbags to prepare for the upcoming tropical weather

Fort Myers Beach resident Robert Burns said he is already preparing for the upcoming weather after dealing with the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene. The area suffered from extensive flooding.

Fort Myers Beach resident Robert Burns got up early to fill sandbags.

However, Burns said preparing for tropical weather is nothing new to him.

“I got knocked out by Andrew, Ian and a few other hurricanes,” he said. “So I’m starting to get good at it. You know, because there are so many storms.”

Burns told Scott that Helene had suffered water injuries.

“Everything outside was basically destroyed,” Burns said. “I had a few things inside, like a cooler, small as a refrigerator, and a portable air conditioner, but there was mud and sand on the floor.”

He doesn’t think the sandbags made the situation worse.

“We blocked it pretty good with sandbags front and back,” he said.

On Saturday, Burns prepared 20 sandbags.
