An American court orders billionaire boxer Floyd Mayweather to pay a Nigerian company .9 billion

A US court upheld an original ruling ordering billionaire boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. paying compensation to the Nigerian company in the amount of $2.4 million.

Mayweather was ordered to pay damages to Zinni Media Concept Limited for breach of contract.

It was established that the dispute began in 2017, after both sides reached an agreement.

According to the company’s media director, Alex Nwankwo, the undisputed heavyweight champion, had several contracts to perform in Africa, including Nigeria.

Nwankwo claimed that Mayweather terminated his contract and did not refund him the advance payment made to him by Zinni Media.

Mayweather’s lawyers in the dispute with Zinni Media

The media executive said the boxing icon’s legal representatives argued that Zinni Media, being Nigerian, had no jurisdiction over the refund.

According to Nwankwo, the company took legal action after doing everything it could to recover the money. Via Thisday he said:

“After several unsuccessful attempts to recover appearance fees from the American boxer, the company initiated legal proceedings against Mayweather in 2018, accusing him of breach of contract, unjust enrichment and fraud.”

In October 2023, a lower court in California ruled in favor of the Nigerian company and awarded $1.6 million in damages, $721,881 in judgment interest, $16,270 in attorney fees and $285 in other costs, for a total of $2. 4 million dollars.

Affirming the lower court’s ruling in the case, Eva McClintock of the California Court of Appeals ordered Mayweather to make the payment.

Despite the finality of the case, Mayweather has yet to pay compensation.
