‘SNL’ Instigates J.D. Vance and Tim Walz Romance in VP Debate Parody: “Why Are They Vibrating?!”

Watch Bowen Yang and Jim Gaffigan find “common ground” as vice presidential candidates – much to Kamala Harris’ dismay.

This wouldn’t be the right debate if Saturday Night Live I didn’t pierce it.

Days after Sen. J.D. Vance and Gov. Tim Walz shared the stage during the vice presidential matchup, SNL she brought in her election cycle impersonators to make fun of their performance. Turn? While Maya Rudolph’s Kamala Harris looks on in horror, Walz (Jim Gaffigan) and Vance (Bowen Yang) come dangerously close to creating a bromance.

A spark occurs after the duo deliver their opening remarks, and Vance Yang skillfully dodges a series of questions, leading to an unexpected compliment from Walz Gaffigan.

“Wow, this guy is good,” Gaffigan, as Walz notes in the parody. “He has the answer to everything!”

Taken aback, Yang Vance warmly replies, “Thank you. It’s quite nice.”

As fake Vance and fake Walz exchange smiles, moderator Norah O’Donnell (Heidi Gardner) feels uncomfortable. “I’m not sure why you’re connecting,” she says, “but let’s move on.”

Later, the VP nominees double down on their ties as the sketch cuts to a mockery of Walz’s memorable debate gibberish, in which he awkwardly addressed his claim that he was in Hong Kong during the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.

“So I think I went to Epcot,” Walz explains to Gaffigan. “You can go all over the world, and I had a couple in the section in Germany and I thought I went to China. Either way, I’m a jerk.”

He then points to Vance and says, “But I’m sure this guy has some things he’d like to back out of, too.”

“He’s right about that,” Vance Yang replies honestly. Then they add in unison: “This is an area where we have a lot in common.”

Closing your eyes SNLVance and Walz slowly raise their hands to touch the split screen.

Meanwhile, back at home, Rudolph’s Kamala is understandably worried as she watches the whole thing unfold while sitting with her husband, Doug Emhoff (Andy Samberg). After drinking wine dramatically, he complains, “Why are they friends!? Why do they vibrate!”

But in the end – after a break from Dana Carvey as the confused, drifter, ice cream-obsessed President Joe Biden – Harris celebrates her victory. At the end of the debate, Walz asks Vance to admit that Donald Trump lost the 2020 presidential election, to which he refuses to give a clear answer.

“Honey, we made it,” says Samberg as Emhoff. “We sensed a signal. What do the pollsters say?”

“It’s a huge victory,” Rudolph replies. “It didn’t matter!”
