9 New TV Shows Premiering on Netflix, Hulu and More (October 7-13)

If you feel like relaxing on the couch, check out all the hottest new TV shows premiering this week on Netflix, Hulu and other streaming services, as well as TV and cable channels.

This week’s new TV show will feature two returning favorites: high school comedy “Abbott Elementary,” Season 4 and teen adventure drama “Outer Banks,” Season 4. This week will feature several star-studded debuts, including the psychological thriller “Disclaimer” with Cate Blanchett, the boxing drama “La Máquina” with Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, and the NBA documentary series “Starting 5” with LeBron James. In previous specials, Ali Wong talked about marriage, having children, and now, fittingly, divorce. Let’s call it the circle of modern life. The comedian’s latest set, filmed at the Wiltern in Los Angeles during her sold-out Netflix Is a Joke Fest residency last spring, explores the ups and downs of being a divorced mom, including dating. Wong even mentions how she was stalked by her current boyfriend Bill Hader, although she jokes that she almost rejected him because she paid for a dating app: “I gotta get paid!”

Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna have collaborated several times since they starred in 2001’s “Y Tu Mamá También,” but for the most part their Hollywood careers have been separate. Now they reunite in this boxing drama, Hulu’s first Spanish-language original. Boxer Esteban “La Máquina” Osun (García Berna) finds himself in a difficult situation after a devastating defeat, but his manager and best friend Andy Lujan (Luna) is determined to get him back to the top with a high-profile match. When they come into conflict with a nefarious organization, the match promises deadly consequences for the longtime friends.

“Abbott Elementary” Season 4 (ABC)

The romantic will-they-won’t-they conflict between Janine (Quinta Brunson) and Gregory (Tyler James Williams) has finally been resolved – they confessed their feelings to each other and KISSED in the season three finale. What now? Their new status will certainly require some adjustments for both themselves and other Abbott teachers. And as always, a new school year means new craziness, like animals in the classroom and (shudder) a case of ringworm. Education carries many risks.

Forget about prestige television. Forget about even watching TV. Sometimes I feel like giving in to a guilty pleasure. And that’s what “Outer Banks” is – simply a vehicle in which to watch stupid, beautiful people have fun, completely unrealistic adventures. The season three finale ended with an 18-month flashback during which the Pogues received a lucrative and tempting offer to find Blackbeard’s treasure. Season 4 returns to show viewers how they got to this point. After finding gold in El Dorado, the Pogues return home and lead a “normal” life. Together they run a bait and fishing tackle shop and a tourist equipment rental shop. However, after some financial setbacks, they decide to take part in a treasure hunt – which naturally involves the appearance of new enemies hot on their heels.

It’s the season of thrills and chills, served up by various new horror projects like “The Cup” from executive producer James Wan (“The Conjuring” universe). A disparate group of people trapped on a farm in rural Georgia must unite in the face of a mysterious threat to survive. The cast includes Yvonne Strahovski, Scott Speedman and Chaske Spencer. Wan describes the series as “a genre-bending mix of horror, mystery and drama, with layers unfolding like an absorbing puzzle.” You can keep the light on while watching.

This animated spinoff series of the video game series picks up where the Survivor trilogy left off. This is a continuation of the next chapter of Lara Croft’s travel adventures. More than 25 years after her first appearance, Lara (voiced by Hayley Atwell) continues to explore ancient mysteries and discover lost truths in breathtaking – and dangerous – places. Netflix is popular for animated series based on big franchises (see: “Terminator Zero”), and the new “Tomb Raider” could join the good company.
