Year 2024 Gramophone The Classical Music Awards ceremony, presented by Presto Music, will be remembered for a long time. The ceremony celebrated some truly extraordinary recordings, as well as outstanding, lifetime contributions to classical music. Cappella Pratensis conductor Stratton Bull receives the Early Music Award for his recording of M. ObrechtIssa Maria Zart. Gramophone critic Lindsay Kemp said of the recording: “Cappella Pratensis confidently supports the great ebb and flow of this marvelous work – a remarkable achievement.”

Violinist Hilary Hahn with the Instrumental Award she received for her recording of the Ysaÿe Violin Sonatas, a recording about which Charlotte Gardner wrote that “it is difficult to imagine how any future recording could give the listener anything of greater artistic or sonic value.”

To celebrate Opera Rara’s Label of the Year award, tenor Iván-Ayón Rivas sings Arturo’s aria from the opera Mercadante Il proscrittofor which Anna Tilbrook joined at the piano.

The winning album in the Contemporary category (sponsored by PRS For Music and PPL) is an album with music by Kaija Saariaho featuring Olivier Latra and the Orchester Philharmonique de Radio France and Orchester National de France and conductors Ernest Martinez Izquierdo, Hannu Lintu and Olari Elts on Radio France. The award is received by the music director of Radio France, Michel Orier.

The winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award was Michael Tilson Thomas, who was unable to attend the ceremony, while actor Simon Callow pays tribute to the great conductor and composer.

Conductor Andrew Manze receives the Orchestral Award – sponsored by Lark Music – for his wonderful album of music by Vaughan Williams, including: Job, Dance Maskwith RLPO on the Onyx label. “Meticulously crafted and boasting RLPO’s superbly coordinated, infectiously committed performance,” as our reviewer Andrew Achenbach put it.

The winner of this year’s Artist of the Year award, sponsored by Classic FM, is soprano Carolyn Sampson.

Frequent collaborators Carolyn Sampson and Joseph Middleton star in The Gramophone Classical Music Awards celebrating Sampson’s Artist of the Year.

Violinist Isabelle Faust receives the Chamber Prize for her recording of Schumann’s piano quartet and quintet, made together with Anne Katharina Schreiber, Antoine Tamestit, Jean-Guihen Queyras and Alexander Melnikov for Harmonia Mundi. “Almost everywhere on this beautifully crafted recording there is something new to discover,” writes Andrew Farach-Colton of their album.

This year’s Choral Award went to Elgar’s recording Gerontius’ dream from the Polish National Youth Choir, the Gabrieli Consort & Players and Paul McCreesh (pictured) with soloists Nicky Spence, Anna Stéphany and Andrew Foster-Williams at Signum Classics. According to critic Richard Lawrence: “This recording by Paul McCreesh, the first on period instruments, ranks among the best of them.”

Isabelle Faust returns to the stage – with violin in hand – for the Concerto Award for her recording of Britten’s Violin Concerto and chamber works with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and conductor Jakub Hrůša for the album Harmonia Mundi. Gramophone critic David Threasher wrote: “This will surely become a modern reference point for the Concerto.”

Pianist Yunchan Lim achieved the extraordinary feat of placing two recordings on the three-album shortlist for the Piano Award (sponsored by Kawai). He won the Piano Award for recording Chopin’s Etudes for Decca. Here he receives the Editorial Award International piano and deputy editor-in-chief GramophoneTim Parry.
