Sugar beet farmers celebrate a bountiful harvest and appeal for road safety – InForum

FARGO — Harvest is officially underway across the Fargo area in full supply for sugar beet farmers.

An early planting season, combined with flooding and a record dry fall, left farmers looking forward to October.

However, they claim that the harvest results so far have been great.

Currently, the main task is to remind drivers about the need to stay safe near agricultural equipment on the roads.

“We just want to give these drivers a little more space and give them a lot of room in front of us to slow down, go around the corners and stuff like that,” said Eric Branch, sugar beet specialist with North Dakota State University Extension.

Sugar beet growers expect to spend the next few weeks gathering beets and storing them until spring.
