Newcastle vs Chelsea LIVE: Latest score and updates as the hosts strike twice in quick succession

‘They deserve more points’ – Maresca on facing struggling Newcastle in the PL

Newcastle United and Chelsea renew hostilities in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night, just days after meeting in the Premier League. The tie in the fourth round takes place at St. James’ Park, whereas in the top flight it was the Blues who won 2-1 at home, Cole Palmer once again among the goals for his side.

Eddie Howe’s Magpies have again suffered with injuries and inconsistency to key players, leaving them 12th in the league table with three wins, three draws and three defeats so far – while Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea are fifth after five wins in nine.

However, they are also far more likely to change more names this evening, with the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Christopher Nkunku all hoping for game time and not currently in Maresca’s league set-up. With a place in the quarter-finals at stake, both teams are confident of going all-out for victory.

A great block! Lloyd Kelly is there in the nick of time to deny Joao Felix after the rest of Newcastle’s defensive unit has lost track of the Portuguese.

The chances keep coming. Joe Willock drags a shot wide from 20 yards, an apparent deflection not tainted by the officials.

Newcastle 2-0 Chelsea, 30 minutes

Chelsea are rattled. Christopher Nkunku almost makes the same mistake from the next free-kick, showing his recovery speed to step back in time after letting Alexander Isak escape yet again.

GOAL! NEWCASTLE 2-0 Chelsea (Axel Disasi own goal, 26 minutes)

Another soft, soft goal for Chelsea to concede in a nightmare three minutes! First they leave Alexander Isak all alone from a free kick, switch off and let the striker stroll down the left. His deflected cross still needed to be dealt with but Joe Willock gets his head on it and Axel Disasi can’t sort his feet and turns into his own net.

GOAL! NEWCASTLE 1-0 Chelsea (Alexander Isak, 23 minutes)

For the second time in four days, Alexander Isak scores against Chelsea!

It’s a terrible moment for the visitors. They hit the ball around the edge of the area without proper care and attention, Renato Veiga gave a hospital delivery. Joelinton rushes and passes the ball free for Sandro Tonali to slide in and set up his Swedish striker. Isak finds the bottom corner with typical aplomb.

Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea, 21 minutes

Lively play from Joao Felix, cutting in and then out to confuse a couple of retreating defenders and finally slot a shot between them. There is too much humor in the effort, but Felix’s flashing feet look in good condition.

And now Sean Longstaff follows Schar in getting his name written down, out of control as he claps Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. The midfielder is 27 today – not the card he would have liked to have received.

Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea, 16 minutes

There is a good fight brewing between Joelinton and Axel Disasi on that side, two tall and powerful individuals who have a couple of early entertaining duels.

At the other end, Fabian Schar is a little late with a blistering Christopher Nkunku as the Chelsea striker makes quick advances down the right. The Newcastle captain goes into the book.

Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea, 12 minutes

Joao Felix looks set to play as Chelsea’s number ten just behind Christopher Nkunku, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Mudryk offering width on either side. Joelinton is in Newcastle’s front three rather than the midfield role where we have seen him more often in the last few seasons.

Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea, 10 minutes

Enzo Fernandez’s attempt to switch the game goes awry, the lofted pass misplaced and misjudged, leaving Mykhailo Mudryk with far too much to do.
