“We had something in our hands that we lost,” Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. “It’s disappointing. We did a lot of good things and we have to continue to clean up the things that we need to clean up.”

Offensively, Tyrese Haliburton’s pick-and-roll schemes and Pascal Siakam’s low-post spin cycles haven’t matched last year’s scoring, but their connection is still a dangerous threat inside and out.

At the other end of the court, the Pacers — who had the seventh-worst defensive rating last year — haven’t figured it out in their 1-3 start, with glaring perimeter and rebounding issues that have gone unresolved.

On the Celtics’ side, their title defense (while dealing with Kristaps Porzingis’ absence) has been nearly perfect. Payton Pritchard went off on the Bucks at TD Garden on Monday, capping a memorable night with 28 points in 28 minutes — including eight 3-pointers — in a 119-108 victory.

“Payton is a killer,” Jaylen Brown said. “He’s always looking to put pressure on a defense. If you don’t put pressure on him and you don’t protect him, he’ll turn you on.”

As the Celtics land in Indianapolis to begin a four-game road trip, they hope Pritchard’s hot shooting and energy remain.

Sam Houser has been upgraded to probable to play Wednesday after being sidelined with lower back pain.

Notes: Payton Pritchard’s electric performance Monday night against Milwaukee marked his third game in double-figure scoring, and after the win, he tied for the NBA lead in 3-pointers made with 19. “The guy’s just good,” Joe Mazzulla said. . “He kept us in it in the first half and he just finds different ways to affect games.” … Jaylen Brown scored a team-high 30 points against the Bucks, 21 of which came in the second half, with his crucial dribble drives and stop-on-a-dime jump shots in the paint. … Despite the loss to the Magic on Monday, Tyrese Haliburton said the game was a step in the right direction. “We’ll move on from here,” he said. “We understand our tempo hasn’t been as high as it was last season, but we’re just trying to do a better job of speeding up the game and playing more casually. I thought we did a good job of that .”
