Brentford 1-1 Sheffield Wednesday – Carabao Cup result as The Bees edged The Owls 5-4 on penalties to reach the last eight

BEES REACH LAST EIGHT AFTER SHOOT-OUT TRIUMPH

Goalkeeper Mark Flekken was the hero as Brentford reached the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a penalty shoot-out win over Sheffield Wednesday at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The first nine spot-kicks were dispatched with aplomb, leaving The Bees shot-stopper to save Liam Palmer’s effort to secure a 5-4 success after the tie ended 1-1 after 90 minutes

Thomas Frank’s men had got off to a flyer as Kevin Schade tapped in his first goal in 16 outings at the second attempt after visiting keeper Pierce Charles had kept out his initial effort after 11 minutes.

Mathias Jensen and Bryan Mbeumo came close to doubling the Premier League side’s lead, but they could not find the finish to reflect their dominance on the scoresheet.

Sheffield Wednesday had little threat but surprised the hosts just shy of the hour when Djeidi Gassama fired a long-range strike.

The visitors held on from there to earn a chance for the upset in the shoot-out, but fell just short at the death.

Next, Brentford visit Fulham in the Premier League on Monday evening. Sheffield Wednesday host Watford in the Championship on Saturday.
